📀 📀 📀 Camille Saint-Saëns’s exquisite orchestral piece was first written as a standalone work, later becoming the core of his Algerian Suite. Its source of inspiration was Blidah, an oasis town at the foot of the Atlas Mountains, south of Algiers, which the French composer visited on his first journey there in 1873. We might call it a kind of musical postcard, untouched by local idioms, a product of the Romantic spirit and of the exoticism of the age — some would replace “Romantic” with “colonial,” perhaps with reason. What matters is the inspiration that gives birth to a work such as Rêverie du soir, and it is that inspiration which lets the work rise loftily above eras and conditions.
