Ο Jackie Mclean είναι από τους κορυφαίους άλτο σαξοφωνίστες όλων των εποχών (με συμμετοχές σε άλμπουμ των Miles Davis, Charles Mingus, Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers, Ornette Coleman, Lee Morgan, Donald Byrd, Dexter Gordon κ.ά., πέρα απ’ τη σόλο καριέρα του) σημαντικός συνθέτης, σπουδαίος παιδαγωγός, και μια από τις πιο οικείες μου φωνές της jazz. Το ότι αυτό, μετά από 7 χρόνια λειτουργίας του blog, είναι το πρώτο post με μουσική του που ανεβάζω, φαίνεται απίστευτο κατ’ αρχήν σε μένα, θυμίζοντάς μου ξανά την απεραντοσύνη του Ωκεανού του Ήχου. Τον ακούμε σε μια δική του σύνθεση από άλμπουμ της χρυσής ωριμότητας, με άσβεστη την καλλιτεχνική του φλόγα. Η ηχογράφηση έγινε στα mid-90s με ένα σεπτέτο αποτελούμενο από σπουδαστές του Jackie McLean Institute στο Πανεμπιστήμιο του Hartford, συν τον υιό αυτού, René McLean στο τενόρο σαξόφωνο. 🟡 🟡 Jackie McLean is one of the top alto saxophonists of all time (with appearances on albums by Miles Davis, Charles Mingus, Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers, Ornette Coleman, Lee Morgan, Donald Byrd, Dexter Gordon and others, in addition to his solo career), an important composer, great educator, and one of the most familiar voices in jazz to me. The fact that this, after 7 years of the blog’s existence, is the first post featuring his music that I’m uploading seems incredible first and foremost to me, reminding me once again of the vastness of the Ocean of Sound. We hear him here on one of his own compositions from an album of golden maturity, with his artistic fire undiminished. The recording was made in the mid-90s with a septet consisting of students from the Jackie McLean Institute at the University of Hartford, plus his son, René McLean, on tenor saxophone.
