🔴 🔴 Alternative rockers of the ’70s and ’80s in songs with Chinese references. Jonathan’s charming little sketch with The Modern Lovers (1977), based on a traditional Chinese melody, is followed by a refreshing track by R.E.M. (1984) from their second album, with its theme drawn from a first-grade elementary school book. We close with some heavy-duty stuff from 1977 : The Heartbreakers was the band formed by Johnny Thunders and Jerry Nolan, singer/guitarist and drummer respectively, having left the New York Dolls and joined forces with Richard Hell – bass (formerly of Television) and Walter Lurie – guitar. The song, essentially written by Dee Dee Ramone, has been the cause of Homeric disputes over composing credits. Personally, I prefer the Heartbreakers’ version to that of the Ramones, recorded three years later.

7 CHINESE BROS
This mellow, sweet, short-haired boy
Woman offers, “Pull up a seat”
Take in one symphony now
We’ve just begun to battle
Wrap your heel in bones of steel
Turn the leg, a twist of color
Autumn waited, hold it to you
In the colored, come another
Seven Chinese brothers swallowing the ocean
Seven thousand years to sleep away the pain
She will return
She will return
This mellow, sweet, short-haired boy
Woman offers, “Pull up a seat”
Take in one symphony now
We’ve just begun to battle
Wrap your heel in bones of steel
Turn the leg, a twist of color
Autumn waded seven seas
Swim the color, come another
Seven Chinese brothers swallowing the ocean
Seven thousand years to sleep away the pain
She will return
She’ll return
(She will return)
(She will return)
This mellow, sweet, short-haired boy
Woman offers, “Pull up a chair”
Take in one symphony now, Mao
I guess we lost that battle
Wrap your heel in bones of steel
Turn the leg, a twist of color
Autumn waded seven seas
Swim the color, come another
Seven Chinese brothers swallowing the ocean
Seven thousand years the Communi did reign
She will return
She’ll return
She will return
She’ll return
CHINESE ROCKS
Somebody called me on the phone
They said, “Hey, is Dee Dee home?”
Do you wanna take a walk?
Do you wanna go and cop?
Do you wanna go and get some Chinese rocks?
I’m living on a Chinese rock
All my best things are in hock
I’m living on a Chinese rock
Everything is in the pawn shop
It is!
The plaster’s falling off the wall
My girlfriend’s crying in the shower stall
It’s hot as a bitch
I should have been rich
But I’m just digging a Chinese ditch
I’m living on a Chinese rock
All my best things are in hock
I’m living on a Chinese rock
Everything is in the pawn shop
It is!
The plaster’s falling off the wall
My girlfriend’s crying in the shower stall
It’s hot as a bitch
I should have been rich
But I’m just digging a Chinese ditch
I’m living on a Chinese rock
I’m living on a Chinese rock
I’m living on a Chinese rock
I’m living on a Chinese rock
I’m living on a Chinese rock
I’m living on a Chinese rock
