A song by the adorable British posters from the second, most ambitious and …last album, Odessey And Oracle of 1968.
This band is, in my view, the epitome of underrated.
There she sits her hands are held
Tight around her glass
She only needs to be alone
She knows this mood will pass
To realize that she was strong
And he too weak to stay
And to realize that she is better off this way
Brief candles in her mind
Bright and tiny gems of memory
Brief candles burn so fine
Leaves a light inside where she can see
What makes it all worthwhile
Her sadness makes her smile
His alone girl fades away
Left out on a limb
Finds he needs her more because
She’s no more need for him
He understood so very well
The things she had to say
Soon he’ll understand that he is better off this way
Brief candles in his mind
Bright and tiny gems of memory
Brief candles burn so fine
Leaves a light inside where he can see
What makes it all worthwhile
His sadness makes him smile
In the corner see his face
The man just sips his drink
Not one feeling does he show
Far too numb to think
He does not say a single word
No word of love to say
Maybe he will soon believe he’s better off this way
Brief candles in his mind
Bright and tiny gems of memory
Brief candles burn so fine
Leaves a light inside where he can see
What makes it all worthwhile
His sadness makes him smile

I hadn’t heard this one from The Zombies. I like it.
The whole album is considered a masterpiece, and rightfully so. Thank you!
You’re welcome!
The Zombies are the epitome of the 60’s. I adore many of their songs, but I don’t recall this one.
Sad to hear they are underrated.
Maybe not now [they’ve achieved legend status], but they were surely underrated back then. After all, that’s why they split after this one, their second album. Thank you Resa!
It’s like artists/painters who starve in their lifetime, go without recognition. Now, their paintings sell for hundreds of thousands.
Maybe not at the same scale but, you get the picture. The Zombies had an amount of fans back in the day, but very few compared to the really successful.
Crazy! They put out some classics, of the era’s rock genre.
Very interesting song – reminiscent of a Syd-Barrett-era Pink Floyd. I don’t really know this band or the album. I shall rectify that!
