This man’s voice is tied with carefree childhood – for some of us anyway. I don’t know how surprising his steady presence is – at the time of this recording he is 81. Nor do I think it should : the artist’s “obligation” to withdraw at …30, or at least 50, is just another deleterious myth of youth culture. The song is an brilliant proposal from stcigar.
I met a young man on the skeleton coast
He was out of his feet and he was pale as a ghost
I asked him his name, he said Lazarus, man
I’ve come to this country from a far away land
I can’t quite remember that, the last time I was on shore
Could’ve been twelve years, it could’ve been more
But I’ve seen tribulation and it troubled my mind
Can’t quite remember what I, what I come here to find
It’s wind on the ocean, rain on the land
Three drops of water and one grain of sand
I’ll tell you the story as quick as I can
I’ve got nothing but time, I’m Lazarus, man, yeah
He said, “I woke this mornin’ and felt a little bit strange”
By mid afternoon there was fever and pain
And later that night with a few friends at my side
I went of to sleep and I, I guess that i died
I was stumblin’ and rising so I, I couldn’t quite tell
One foot in glory and the other in hell
A one side the garden and on one side flame
And I thought I heard somebody call out my name, yeah
Somebody was saying, “Hey, Lazarus arise”
So I sat up and opened my eyes
You know I wanted to dance but I, I didn’t have room
So I threw off the sheets and walked out of the tomb
And it’s wind on the ocean, rain on the sand
Three drops of water and one grain of sand
I’ll tell you the story as quick as I can
I’ve got nothing but time, Lazarus, man
I’ve been from Nazareth to high Barbary
I realise there’s no rest for me
I’ve been out on the desert
I’ve been out on the deep
But since he help me rise
I ain’t had no sleep
Wind on the ocean, rain on the land
Three drops of water and one grain of sand
I’ll tell you the story as quick as I can
I’ve got nothing but time, Lazarus, man
I met a young man on the skeleton coast
He was out of his feet and he was pale as a ghost
I asked him his name, he said Lazarus, man
I’ve come to this country from a far away land
It’s wind on the ocean, rain on the land
Three drops of water and one grain of sand
I’ll tell you the story, quick as I can
I’ve got nothing by time, I’m Lazarus, man
Yes, it’s wind on the ocean, rain on the land

That’s a wonderful song. How many talented people has the myth of youth sent into obscurity? Tom Jones sounds great at 81. I love his take on the Lazarus story.
Damn right. Countless talented people have fulfilled Pete Townsend’s wish “hope I die before I get old”- career wise.
I suppose one of the reasons is that “youth” is more easily deceived and manipulated. And this includes the artists and the audience.
Great song and he sounds good at 81. Remarkable!
A strangely compelling song. I really enjoyed it.
Thank you!!!
Love this Tom Jones song. I’ve always adored his strong voice. Listening for the third time.
There is something reminiscent … in a sort of genre way …. of “Spill the Wine” – Eric Burdon and War.
