Rick Wakeman, a member of the May born musicians club, is one of my childhood idols, and one of the reasons I fell in love with electronic sounds. I made a little tribute to him, not just because he is considered “iconic”, nor just for personal reasons : his first, The Six Wives Of Henry VIII – 1973, is literally a reference album in the field of instrumental, keyboards – oriented music. He has also played an important role in moments of rock history, a token of which we have below : He was among other things David Bowie’s piano player on the albums Space Oddity [his are the mellotron parts, on the eponymous track] and Hunky Dory. He would continue to produce great music with YES, after the Six Wives album, while his solo career was curiously taking off in a universe of blindingly bad taste – you seldom find a single moment worth listening… We hear four of the of Henry VIII’s six wives. And then, on video, some other moments of RW’s career.

In a BBC studio, shortly after David Bowie‘s passing, Rick Wakeman [his pianist οn Hunky Dory] dedicates this song, describing it as the most important he’s ever played on.
RW’s piano, in one of the great moments of a great singer songwriter [this is not an original Cat Stevens song but an adaptation of a 1930s Christian hymn]
There is no way I could describe an experience like this live performance of ‘Awaken’ by YES. I just envy the people who were there. Anyway, as far as our subject is concerned, the track has …plenty o’ Wakeman

I remember the Six Brothers of Henry VIII very well! My brother had the album.
I dare to say your brother’s been a very good influence!
He was!
Excellent post! I love The Six Wives of Henry the Eighth.
All great music.
It’s interesting that you say Wakeman’s solo career curiously took off in a universe of blindingly bad taste. A sad statement, but I laughed at its truth and the way you put it. Thank you! Also, thank you for the Tull song on my post today! Love it!
Hope you get your tech problems sorted soon!
I was saddened myself as a tween, hearing his second album, ‘Journey To Te Center Of The Earth’ [one of my favorite Jules Verne books by the way]. This was a great departure from the 6 Wives already. And it only got worse!
I have a very peculiar problem, unsolved at the moment, which forbids me to comment or like even on my OWN blog. Last times I was able to comment [NOT LIKE!] was through my Twitter account. Now this is forbidden also, and I have no account on [the disgusting] FB.
Thank you!
I’m having tech issues, too. Still, they don’t sound as harsh as yours.
I have no account on FB either. Never will! I’ve always seen it for the invasive creep it is.
I had an Instagram account, but FB bought it and locked me out until I give them my birthday.
Forget it! Others say just lie!
I say that’s not the point. Why should I lie? I don’t want to lie. Why should my privacy be robbed so thoroughly?
Unfortunate about R.W.! Still he had one brilliant solo album on his own, and is a boon to all he plays with.
Be well!
You will get things figured. xx
