Σαν σήμερα, 11 Απριλίου 1889 στη Νέα Ορλεάνη, γεννήθηκε ο Nick LaRocca, συνθέτης, κορνετίστας/τρομπετίστας και ένας από τους πρωτοπόρους της jazz. Ήταν ο αρχηγός των Original Dixieland Jazz Band, της πρώτης jazz μπάντας που μπήκε σε στούντιο ηχογράφησης, εντυπωσιακά δυσφημισμένης μετά τα πρώτα χρόνια της επιτυχίας [1917-21] με το σκεπτικό ότι τα μέλη της ήσαν λευκοί …σφετεριστές ενός “αποκλειστικά μαύρου” ιδιώματος. Ο ίδιος θα εξελισσόταν σε ελαφρώς γραφική φιγούρα, φτάνοντας στο άλλο άκρο και ισχυριζόμενος ότι ήταν ο “δημιουργός της jazz” και ο “Χριστόφορος Κολόμβος της μουσικής”…
Η ιστορική αλήθεια ως προς το [σημαντικότατο] ρόλο που αυτός και η μπάντα έπαιξαν στην εξέλιξη του είδους, είναι ευτυχώς αποκαταστημένη.
Ο LaRocca είναι [συν-]συνθέτης κλασικών κομματιών που επιβίωσαν στο jazz ρεπερτόριο για δεκαετίες.
Το πρώτο από αυτά που ακούμε είναι η ιστορική πρώτη jazz ηχογράφηση που έγινε το 1917: “Livery Stable Blues”. Το δεύτερο είναι η πιο διάσημη απ’ τις συνθέσεις του Larocca, “Tiger Rag”. On this date, April 11, 1889, Nick LaRocca, composer, cornetist/trumpeter and one of the pioneers of jazz was born in New Orleans. He was the leader of the Original Dixieland Jazz Band, the first jazz band to enter a recording studio, remarkably discredited after the years of success [1917-21] on the grounds that its members were white …usurpers of an “exclusively black” idiom. LaRocca would later evolve into a slightly comical figure, reaching the other end, and claiming to be the “creator of jazz” and “Christopher Columbus of music”…
The historical truth as to the [very important] role that he and the band played in the evolution of the genre is fortunately restored. LaRocca is the [co-]composer of all-time classics that still surface on the jazz repertoire.
