MUSE : SOLDIER’S POEM / TAKE A BOW (2006)

🔴 🔴 Not exactly “sinless” in terms of positions, but important in their own way: bringing a minimum of social awareness to the mainstream, combining it with the presentation to it of a musical genre (prog rock), for which the respect of the mainstream was, and essentially still is, below zero. We hear two dangerously up-to-date Muse songs from their 2006 album Black Holes and Revelations…

SOLDIER’S POEM
Throw it all away
Lets lose ourselves
Cause there’s no one left for us to blame
Its a shame we’re all dying
And do you think you deserve your freedom
How could you send us all far away from home
When you know damn well that this is all
I would still lay down my life for you
And do you think you deserve your freedom
No I don’t think you do
There’s no justice in the world
There’s no justice in the world
And there never was

TAKE A BOW
Corrupt, you corrupt
Bring corruption to all that you touch
Hold, you’ll behold
And beholden for all that you’ve done
And spell, cast a spell
And cast a spell on the country you run
And risk, you will risk
You will risk all their lives and their souls
And burn, you will burn
You will burn in hell
Yeah, you’ll burn in hell
You’ll burn in hell
Yeah, you’ll burn in hell for your sins
Ooh, and our freedom’s consuming itself
What we’ve become is contrary to what we want
Take a bow
Death, you bring death
And destruction to all that you touch
Pay, you must pay
You must pay for your crimes against the earth
And Hex, feed the Hex
Feed the Hex on the country you love
And beg, you will beg
You will beg for their lives and their souls
And burn, you will burn
You will burn in hell
Yeah, you’ll burn in hell
You’ll burn in hell
Yeah, you’ll burn in hell
You’ll burn in hell
Yeah, you’ll burn in hell for your sins

Ok, Oannes tell me I’m not the only one who thinks Muse sounds incredibly like Radiohead? I had to AI google it to see if I was going mad and it appears I am(!) because AI google tells me there’s no connection between the bands and no one else seems to think the lead singers sound identical or that the general soundscapes are similar! Is it just me??

Of course not – and let’s not even get into my opinion about the AI’s ‘pronouncements’…or AI chat boxes in general. 🤮
Both bands have repeatedly spoken about their influences from 70s progrock, and their sound clearly shares common elements …including Yorke’s and Bellamy’s voices. The influence on Muse’s sound is much more obvious, in various grandiose (not always successful) passages, in contrast to Radiohead’s, more introverted, moody and “personal”. Let me add that I’m not a big fan of either of the two. 😃

Weirdly, Muse does nothing for me at all but Radiohead does hit me hard. What the difference is, I’m not sure but I do count Yorke’s group as one of my top 20 bands. Muse wouldn’t be in my top 100.

Radiohead are definitely more serious stuff – they’re just not my cup of tea.
