LAURIE STYVERS : FIVE LEAVES LEFT (1971)

The indifference of the public and some “influential” critics of the time (early ’70s) prevented a significant songwriting and vocal talent from fully flourishing : the American singer-songwriter Laurie Styvers
would leave the recording landscape after just two releases. The song we listen to, another exciting stcigar’s proposal, comes from her debut album Spilt Milk. Like other obscure figures of the same period, Laurie would be discovered decades later by a younger generation. But she’d died well before that – in 1998 at the age of 46.

It’s five leaves left
And it’s the end of the day
We’ve got to empty the ashtrays now
And put the carved wooden box away
Thank God, we’ve got each other
To pass the night away
Not huddled up in circles
To help each other into another day
‘Cause here is yet left
For what we have to do
So let’s go on to Hampstead Heath
On and on, hit upon the view
Hit upon the view
Thank God we’ve got the pleasure
Of know that we’ll be
Lying cuddled up forever
In the shady cool of our security
We’ll rise rather later that noon, so
Bathe each other and get the housework done
And tidy up the paperwork
And then you’ll sit and play
Leaving all the hustles behind us on the away
The store men bring our groceries
And pull their hats down on their eyes
Accept the change and wink at me
To manage their goodbyes
Thank God, we’ve got each other
To lay ourselves upon
And we’ll go on winking back
At four, our shadows appearing with the sun
It’s time to tell if time was in the right
I’ll inform you all the reasons
But it’s up to you
Yeah, it’s up to you
To tell the time
Thank God we’ve got the comfort
Of knowing what we share
Feeling very much together
As we drag each other’s hair
Thank God, we’ve got each other
To pass the night away
Lying cuddled up in circles
To help each other into another day
