KEVIN AYERS : THE LADY RACHEL (1969)

Δεν ξέρω αν πρέπει να ευχαριστούμε τον Jimi Hendrix γι’ αυτό και τα υπόλοιπα τραγούδια του Joy Of A Toy (πρώτου άλμπουμ του Kevin Ayers μετά την αποχώρηση απ’ τους Soft Machine). Εμείς ακούμε το κλασικό τoυ, ‘The Lady Rachel (single version)’. Κάποια ελαφρώς περιττά …ενορχηστρωτικά κιλά δεν καταφέρνουν να μειώσουν τη μαγεία. 📀 📀 I don’t know if we should thank Jimi Hendrix for this and the rest of the songs on Joy of a Toy (Kevin Ayers’ first album after leaving Soft Machine). Something tells me they would have emerged anyway. In any case, it was Jimi who “convinced” Kevin to continue the music career he seemed determined to abandon. We’re listening to his classic ‘Lady Rachel (single version)‘. Some slightly superfluous …orchestral pounds fail to diminish the magic.

She climbs up the stairs by the light of a candle
Then the door with no handle is closing behind her again
She places the light on a chair by the window
Says a prayer while the wind blows
And then in her bed clothes she hides
Now she’s safe from the darkness
She’s safe from its clutch
Now nothing can harm her
At least not very much
What will you dream of tonight Lady Rachel?
What will you dream of tonight?
Who will you dream of tonight Lady Rachel?
Who will you dream of tonight?
She climbs up a hill and is handed a parcel
Then she unwraps the parcel
And discovers a castle inside
The draw bridge is open
And a voice from the water
Says ‘Welcome my daughter’
“We’ve all been expecting you to come”
She climbs up the stairs with the light of a candle
Then the door with no handle is closing behind her again
Now she’s safe from the darkness
She’s safe from it’s clutch
Now nothing can harm her
At least not very much
What will you dream of tonight Lady Rachel?
What will you dream of tonight?
Who will you dream of tonight Lady Rachel?
What will you dream of tonight?
Who will you dream of tonight Lady Rachel?
What will you dream of tonight?

Thank you to Jimi, and to you. I like this, but don’t know the music or musician’s name. The album title has a familiar ring, though. Bit of “Moody Blues” feel in it.

You’re right, and I hadn’t realised it! It’s the voice and not only that. The song itself has something distantly reminiscent of Moody BLues’ ‘Dear Diary’ https://youtu.be/7t8YpP4b39Q?si=BkdFO7lTqX7B_IuI

I enjoyed this. It has very Atom Heart Mother Floydian feels to it – and not in a bad way! This piece will be an earworm for me, I suspect, for days to come.

Well, if I was the producer of this, I’d erase the Atom Heart Mother Floydian horns, or at least change their lines. The way they are, I feel like they hold back the groove a little bit. It’s a gorgeous song nevertheless.
With Atom Heart Mother, Floyd tried to move a step further (and darker) from Sgt. Pepper’s Beatles imho. In other words, to do what the entire progressive rock “movement” did in the ’70s. Floyd were content to exclusively develop the psychedelic Beatles element. And yet they are registered in the progressive genre, and in a prominent position.🤨
The only album that fits with this genre is Atom Heart Mother, so it’s surprising (or is it?) that they themselves, especially mr. Waters, have essentially disavowed it.
