Ολοκληρώνοντας ένα ετήσιο κύκλο μηνιαίων αφιερωμάτων, θα ακούσουμε στη διάρκεια του Μάη πολλή μουσική του Johannes Brahms (1833-1897), απ΄τις επιβλητικότερες μορφές της μουσικής του 19ου αι. και ενός από τους πιο αγαπημένους μου συνθέτες. Και, κατά δεύτερο λόγο, πολλή μουσική του Miles Davis και του κινηματογραφικού Danny Elfman – επίσης εορταζόντων αυτό το μήνα.
Ξεκινάμε με θρησκευτικά έργα του Brahms : η Missa Canonica, από τα άγνωστα έργα του, γράφτηκε το 1856, εν είδει τεχνικής άσκησης. Αυτό τουλάχιστον είχε στο μυαλό του ο “23χρονος” όταν την συνέθετε, εξ ου και η παρτιτούρα πέρασε στη λήθη, για να ανακαλυφθεί ένα αιώνα αργότερα και να πρωτοπαρουσιαστεί δημόσια το 1983.
Δεν θα σχολιάσω το έργο (στο οποίο ο πακτωλός της αναγεννησιακής / μπαρόκ πολυφωνίας συναντά εκείνον του ρομαντικού πνεύματος, επιφανής εκπρόσωπος του οποίου υπήρξε ο Brahms), αφήνοντάς το στην κρίση του ακροατή. Ακούμε το Kyrie, πρώτο μέρος του. Ο Nicol Matt διευθύνει την Chamber Choir Of Europe.

Completing an annual cycle of monthly tributes, we will listen during May to a lot of music by Johannes Brahms (1833-1897), one of the most imposing figures of 19th century music. and one of my favorite composers. And, secondly, a lot of music by Miles Davis and the cinematic Danny Elfman – also celebrating this month.
We begin with Brahms’ sacred works: Missa Canonica, one of his relatively unknown works, was written in 1856, as a technical exercise. At least that’s what the “23-year-old” had in mind when composing it, hence the score passed into oblivion, only to be discovered a century later and first publicly presented in 1983.
I will not comment on the work (in which the Renaissance/Baroque polyphony meets he romantic spirit, of which Brahms was an eminent representative), leaving that to the judgement of the listener. We hear Kyrie, its first part. Nicol Matt conducts the Chamber Choir Of Europe.
