Σαν σήμερα, 4 Απριλίου 1939 γεννήθηκε ο τρομπετίστας, τραγουδιστής και συνθέτης Hugh Masekela, “πατέρας της νοτιοαφρικανκής jazz”. Μετά το ξεκίνημά του ως μέλος των Jazz Epistles, του πρώτου νοτιοαφρικάνικου bebop συγκροτήματος [ανάμεσα στα μέλη ο πιανίστας Dollar Brand, αργότερα γνωστός ως Abdullah Ibrahim] θα φύγει για την Αμερική στις αρχές των ’60s, όπου και θα ξεκινήσει μια ιδιαίτερα πετυχημένη σόλο καριέρα, μια εικόνα της οποίας δίνουν οι παράπλευρες συνεργασίες του με καλλιτέχνες όπως ο μέντοράς του Dizzy Glliespie, ο Fela Kuti, ο Herb Alpert, οι Byrds, Ο Paul Simon, ο Stevie Wonder, ο Marvin Gaye…
Ο HM επέστρεψε το 1990 στην πατρίδα του μετά τη νομιμοποίηση του ANC και την επάνοδο του Nelson Mandela, για τον οποία ειχε γράψει τον anti-apartheid ύμνο “Bring Home Nelson Mandela” [1986]

On this date, April 4, 1939, the trumpeter, singer and composer Hugh Masekela, “father of South African jazz”, was born.
