HEINRICH SCHÜTZ : DEUTSCHES MAGNIFICAT SWW 494

The genius of composer and organist
Heinrich Schütz (1585-1672) was unrivalled in 17th century’s Germany. Today, the early baroque master is considered the most important German musician before J. S. Bach’s appearance. He wrote mainly religious works, such as the Deutsches Mafgnificat that we hear, but also what is considered the first German opera. Unfortunately the manuscript of the work (‘Daphne’) was lost, along with the entirety of his secular production.

There is something about harmonizing in religious much that has always appealed to me.

Even though I’m not religious myself, I ‘m adamant about sacred music being the best music ever written. After all, most of Bach’s music is sacred! And this should tell something about religion in general. Thank you!
