HANK WILLIAMS : RAMBLIN’ MAN (1955)

The
Allman Brothers song (here) is the first one that comes to mind by the same title. Equally important but in the emotional antipodes of that, is this elegiac masterpiece written and sung by country great Hank Williams.

I can settle down
And be doin’ just fine
‘Till I hear an old freight
Rollin’ down the line
Then I hurry straight
Home and pack
And if I didn’t go
I believe I’d blow my stack
I love you, baby
But you gotta understand
When the lord made me
He made a ramblin’ man
Some folks might say
That I’m no good
That I wouldn’t settle
Down if I could
But when that open road
Starts to callin’ me
There’s somethin’ o’er the hill
That I gotta see
Sometimes it’s hard
But you gotta understand
When the lord made me
He made a ramblin’ man
I love to see the towns
A-passin’ by
And to ride these rails
‘Neath god’s blue sky
Let me travel this land
From the mountains to the sea
‘Cause that’s the life I believe
He meant for me
And when I’m gone
And at my grave you stand
Just say God’s called home
Your ra-amblin’ man

I love how he’s on the verge of yodeling. He had a great voice.

Absolutely. It’s just impossible to hear this song without shedding a tear or two. Thank you Tim!

True. Opposite of shedding tears, I posted a parody of “Son of the South” by David Allen Coe called “Son of the Southwest.” DAC’s first line in the song is, “I like to play Hank Williams Jr.’s records just as loud as they with go.” My first line is, “I like to play Alice Cooper’s records just as loud as they will go.” You can see the video at https://wp.me/p1yQyy-bhe

I’d like to have a few words with the inventor of “wordpress” – I’m not sure he’d enjoy the conversation. Anyway, I tried and tried to leave a comment for the video 👍👍👍, but the machine won’t allow it. I’ll try again, hope I’ll finally make it! 👿👹😇

You might need to leave a comment in the reader. I can’t leave comments on a lot of sites.
