I hadn’t heard Grand Funk Railroad in ages. They were a VERY big deal when I was in high school.
I never figured out the reasons of their success [not a huge one, in terms of album sales]. Some of the stuff they wrote was good though. They even got Frank Zappa producing one of their albums!
You can’t go wrong with a Frank Zappa production!
As a matter of fact …you can, in terms of “unit sales” anyway. The Zappa-produced “Good Singin’ Good Playin'” [1976] was GFR’s final attempt for a return to the hits. After that they called it a day – they ‘d already broken up before Zappa persuaded them to give it one more try.
Well, there’s something to be said about not overstaying your welcome. (Are you listening, Mick Jagger?)
Great band. Maybe not commercial, but these guys could play!
Oh yes they could, Zappa was the first to admit it!
I miss Zappa!
