GIOVANNI BATTISTA PERGOLESI [1710 – 1736] : STABAT MATER

Giovanni Battista Pergolesi‘s masterpiece has a story similarly tragic to Mozart’s Requiem: the Italian composer wrote the work while being hospitalized for tuberculosis at the Franciscan monastery of Pozzuoli. He completed the score moments before he died, at the age of 26.
We hear an extensive part of the work.

Felicity Palmer – soprano
Alfreda Hodgson – contralto
The Choir of St. John’s College, Cambridge, The Argo Chamber Orchestra, David Hill – organ.
Conducted by
George Guest

This is gorgeous in its sadness.
    I love the voices.
Crazy that he died at 26 years. At least Mozart live to the ripe old age of 35, almost 36.
    Happy Easter!
