Περπατώντας δίπλα σ’ ένα κανάλι, βλέπει μια πομπή από νεκρώσιμες γόνδολες. Έχει μια ξαφνική διαίσθηση για τον επικείμενο θάνατο του φίλου του. Το πρώτο σχεδίασμα του κομματιού La Lugubre gondola [Η Μαύρη Γόνδολα] γίνεται την ίδια μέρα.
Πράγματι …ο Wagner θα πέθαινε μετά από δυο μήνες, από καρδιακή προσβολή.

1882. Franz Liszt, a friend and father-in-law of Richard Wagner, is a guest of his, in the Palazzo Vendramin-Calergi in Venice.
Walking along a canal, he sees a series of funeral gondolas. He has a sudden intuition about the imminent death of his friend. The first sketch of the piece La Lugubre Gondola [The Black Gondola] is made right then.
Indeed, Wagner would die two months later of a heart attack.
