I love Children’s Corner but I have to say I hate it when pianists play some of his pieces too fast. The Dr Gradus in particular is rattled off as though it is an etude or some other dextrous exercise. There’s a lot of lovely light and shade in Dr Gradus which deserves to be heard, not fast forwarded! However, the other pieces were nice. I particularly liked Jimbo’s Lullaby – a much underrated piece!
I agree about the concept “faster-harder-louder” in general, and I ‘d certainly prefer this particular one in a more nuanced manner.
My only reservation has to do with the title which itself [ironically] implies a technical struggle, in the context of the student’s ascension to “godlike” status.
