The great cornetist, pianist, composer and iconic early jazz figure, Bix Beiderbecke [Leon Bismark Beiderbecke, 1903-1931], is also a member of the densely populated March born club. His playing, οn the lyrical opposite of Louis Armstrong’s rower approach, anticipates, as some say, the sound of Miles Davis. Among other things, Bix gave jazz the first in a long legacy of “martyrs” : alcohol abuse and the life on the road led him to death at the age of 28…The second song from the ones we’re hearing is a composition of his own, with him on the piano.

He made his mark in his short career. He experienced a dramatic death.
He is one of the persons I strangely feel very connected with, although he lived so many years ago.
I’m hearing some Art Tatum in the piano piece! Love it!
Coincidentally this one was recorded the very same year Tatum made his professional debut! Definitely an impressionistic touch on both cases.
Wow! He transformed “Old Man River” into an entirely new song!! I loved hearing his version.
Agreed! Apart from a few classical composers, Bix is the only “ancient” person I feel so much connected with. I’d act like a regular rock fan if I watched him live.
A shame that he died so young.
Indeed it was.
I adore this genre of jazz! Great music here! Only 28… what a shame. Thank you for this music!
I’m a big fan of ’20s jazz myself! On the best eras of this music.
Agree!
