BETH GIBBONS – LIVES OUTGROWN (2024)

Αυτή είναι η πρώτη σόλο ηχογράφηση της Beth Gibbons στα 30 + χρόνια μιας καριέρας, στη διάρκεια της οποίας έχει κυκλoφορήσει 3 άλμπουμ ως τραγουδίστρια & στιχουργός των Portishead, και δυο ακόμα – συνεργασίες με άλλους μουσικούς (‘Out Of Season’ με τον Rustin Man – 2002 & Δεύτερη Συμφωνία του Gorecki με την Polish National Radio Orchestra – 2019).
Ακούμε τρία τραγούδια της (μουσική – στίχοι) από το μελαγχολικό, ακουστικό ως επί το πλείστον και folk προανατολισμών
‘Lives Outgrown’.

This is
Beth Gibbons’ first solo recording in her 30+ year career, during which she has released 3 albums as lead singer & lyricist of Portishead, and two more – collaborations with other musicians (‘Out Of Season’ with Rustin Man – 2002 & Gorecki’s Second Symphony with the Polish National Radio Orchestra – 2019).
We hear three of songs of hers (music – lyrics) from the melancholic, mostly acoustic & folk oriented
‘Lives Outgrown’.

00:00 FLOATING ON A MOMENT
On the path with my restless curiosity
Beyond life, before me
A passenger on no ordinary journey
It’s one of a kind, won’t get left behind
I’m floating on a moment, don’t know how long
No one knows, no one can stay
All going to nowhere (nowhere)
All going, make no mistake
Without control
I’m heading toward a boundary that divides us
Reminds us
Travelling on a voyage where the living, they have never been
Have never seen
I’m floating on a moment, don’t know how long
No one knows, no one can stay
All going to nowhere (nowhere)
All going, make no mistake
All trying but can’t escape
All going to nowhere
Too afraid to be free
Not that I don’t want to return
Not that I don’t want to return
(All going to nowhere, to nowhere)
Oh, honestly
It’s not that I don’t want to return
(All going to nowhere, to nowhere) it just reminds us
Not that I don’t want to return
It just reminds us that all we have, all we have is here and now
But all we have is here and now
(All going to nowhere, to nowhere)
All we have is here and now
(All going to nowhere) it just reminds us
All we have is here and now (all going to nowhere)

05:27 FOR SALE
The charms of illusion they cut like a smile
Erosion of reason a path pathed to buy
Cos the dreams are for sale from afar
Smiling with white teeth the taste of ammonia
The needle delusion a choice made to fail
Cos the dreams are for sale from afar
Just ask yourself how would you like life to be
Just ask yourself would you choose love like me
If we don’t stop now
Will we go to far
If we don’t stop now
Will we go to far
We believe if we stitch it and cook it and rich it
We’ll all numb the pain that we need to fulfil it
But the dreams are for sale from afar
Don’t pretend that you want
what you don’t want to give
What you keep when you sow
when you know you don’t want it
Cos the dreams only for sale from afar
Just ask yourself how would you like life to be
Just ask yourself would you choose love like me
If we don’t stop now
Will we go too far
If we don’t stop now
Will we go too far

09:52 WHISPERING LOVE
Leaves of our tree of life
Where the summer sun… always
Shines through… the trees of wisdom
Where the light is so pure… oh that summer sun
Moon time will linger… through the melody
Of life’s… shortening, longing view
Oh whispering love
Come to me… when you can
Far from our conscious mind
Lie those fallow fields
Where open hearts …will wander
Sweet whispering love
Come to me … when you can
And they … they will run
They will rise where they can
Where they know they are safe to go …
Oh whispering love
Blow through my heart
When you can

As a direct result of this post, I’ve gone and listened to songs by Portishead. Somehow, they’ve gone past by radar! Excellent music. The biggest shock is seeing she’s white! She sounds like Sade in much of her music with the band although on the tracks you’ve shared she has more of a Kate Bush feel to her vocals. Anyway, great artist!

They were / are really great. Not exactly my cup of tea in their prime (I was more into hardcore stuff, and from the trip hop – Portishead’s – genre my favorite was Massive Attack) but I came to appreciate them in the ’00s.
      Thank you!

Very pretty. Mild shades of Sandy Denny/Fairport Convention.
