ASTRUD GILBERTO: AQUA DE BEBER, CORCOVADO (QUIET NIGHTS OF QUIET STARS)

“Aqua De Beber” και “Corcovado (Quiet Nights Of Quiet Stars)”.

On this date, March 29, 1943, Astrud Evangelina Weinert, better known as Astrud Gilberto, was born in Salvador, Brazil. She is one of the emblematic figures of Brazilian music for the second part of the 20th century, and one of the most recognizable voices, with huge crowds of imitators. We hear her on two songs by Jobim. “Aqua De Beber” and “Corcovado (Quiet Nights Of Quiet Stars)”. On the second one, the band includes her husband Joao Gilberto [guitar, vocals] Stan Getz [tenor saxophone], and Gary Burton [vibes].

I definitely remember the first, since it got airplay on popular radio. The second is a sweet tribute to love. Perfect for relaxed Sunday listening. Bossa nova was “boss” as we used to say 🙂

We have few LPs of this beautiful Brazil-born singer. Bossa nova which she helped introduce to the world beyond Brazil has an amazing effect.
