DANDY WARHOLS : (TONY, THIS SONG IS CALLED) LOU WEED (1995)

📀 📀 The Dandy Warhols from Portland, Oregon confirm an unwritten rule: you don’t have to invent the wheel, nor change the course of music history to be amusing. Besides, in moments like this one, they’re something more than that.
Dandys Rule OK was their debut album.

Well, baby just look at Lou
Well, you do what you wanna do
And nothing less for you.
Well, whatever will get you through.
Now Satan will seem like a typical dude
When you notice him stayin’ and staring at you
And I can see you got the heroin blues
Really, it looks so good on you.
Well, baby just look at Lou
I know women and women want to be seen (with you) But that’s OK too,
Those women really look good on you.
Now you always act so cool,
Like you’re waiting for your man on Lexington Avenue.
And no one is there to hook up for you
So, whose place are you going to?
Well, baby just look at Lou
Now, baby just look at Lou
I said, baby just look at Lou
Yeah, baby look at Lou.

They sure sound like they’re channeling Lou Reed!

Yes, and it’s kinda fun, imo! 😊
I never bought into clichés like “you have to find your own voice” and so on. Imitation is a necessary stage for an artist starting out. And if you’re going to find your own voice, that’s how it begins: by imitating your role models.

I enjoyed it! Yes, when I was starting out as a fiction writer, I went through a Raymond Carver minimalist period. 😉

That’s how it goes. You start by imitating things you like. If you’re going to find your own voice, you will. If not, no big deal. And at the end of the day, how else does someone’s “greatness” come about, if not from others imitating them?
