Σύμφωνα με τον Eric Hobsbawm, η σχέση της Σουηδίας με την jazz πηγαίνει πίσω στη δεκαετία του 1920, οπότε προκύπτουν οι πρώτες “λέσχες φίλων”, τοπικές μπάντες, και μετακλήσεις αμερικανών καλλιτεχνών.
Αυτό εξηγεί την αειφορία της σουηδικής σκηνή της jazz …αφήνει όμως ανεξήγητο το πώς καθόλα άξιοι και καταξιωμένοι εγχώριοι μουσικοί αδυνατούν συνήθως να κάνουν γίνoυν γνωστοί πέρα από τα σύνορα της χώρας τους. Ένας από αυτούς είναι ο θαυμάσιος πιανίστας και συνθέτης Jan Lundgren.

According to Eric Hobsbawm, Sweden’s relationship with jazz goes back to the 1920s… It was in this era that the first friends clubs, local bands, and visits from American artists emerged.
This explains the everlasting flowering of the Swedish jazz scene… but it leaves without explanation why most worthy and renowned domestic musicians are unable to make themselves known beyond the borders of their country.
