RUGGERO LEONCAVALLO [1857-1919] : PAGLIACCI – Caballe, Domingo

Την London Symphony Orchestra διευθύνει ο Nello Santi.

On this date, March 8, 1857 the composer Ruggero Leoncavallo was born in Naples. He wrote a large number of operas [music & libretto] none of which came close to the success of his first one “Pagliacci”… It is the only one people remember him for, to this day… From this we hear: Stridono Lassu [Ballatella] with Montserrat Caballe, Vesti La Giubba with Placido Domingo, and the Intermezzo between the two acts. The London Symphony Orchestra is conducted by Nello Santi.

WOW! I know of Pagliacci, but have never sat down and listened to it. All that you presented here is wonderful. Crazy to think Ruggero Leoncavallo was a one hit wonder of his day… in a way.

Unfortunately, he was …and still is. No other RL opera is ever staged [apart from 1 or 2 exceptions] since his death, a century ago. And every other opera apart from Pagliacci [his first one!] was a failure in its time…
