ROXY MUSIC : A SONG FOR EUROPE [STRANDED, 1973]

This masterpiece, from Roxy‘s third album [and best, by far], was written by Bryan Ferry along with the group’s saxophonist, Andy Mackay, who was born on this date, July 23, 1946 in Lostwithiel, UK.

Some shade(s) of “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” in here.
Love it lots, and adore Roxy music. The opening shot makes me smile. It’s the time period when some were have trouble giving up their bell bottoms!

You’re absolutely right about the starting chords resembling “While My Guitar” …and other songs [it’s a familiar sequence]. Happy you’re a fan of one of my all time favorite bands!

Thoroughly enjoyed that and don’t think I’ve heard it before. Thanks.

It’s from the early [and most creative] days of Roxy Music. It’s one of my favorite songs of theirs. Thank you!

I find the vocals to be rough and yet the music is clearly remarkable. Were there other more polished renditions of the song?

Not anyone I know of, I’m 99% sure there isn’t. There are some LIVE versions of early Roxy songs on the magnificent “Viva! Roxy Music” album, which are more polished [and “up-in-your-face” at the same time!] than the studio ones. But ‘Song For Europe”s not included…
If anyone should have just one album from the early [before ‘Manifesto’ – 1979] Roxy Music years, ‘Viva!’ should be the one.

Το όνομα του βραβείου: The Coudenhove-Kalergi European prize
