A number of people were playing in a similar new wave-originated style during the same period. Relatively few managed to stand out, with ideas so compelling that they could substitute for high-octane “adrenaline” and “energy” which was the …desired outcome of the punk explosion. *
The Smiths were one such case. The Teardrop Explodes, and especially Julian Cope in his solo career, were another.

* By the way, this “desired outcome” marked in my eyes the beginning of the end of “youth culture”. Not by chance, during that period (early-middle ’80s), as I was leaving adolescence behind, I completely abandoned “rock” for the sake of classical and jazz — didn’t look back until the early ’90s.
