DAVID BOWIE : THE MAN WHO SOLD THE WORLD x 2 [1995, 1970]

Another song [probably] about a Doppelganger encounter is
Bowie’s classic from the album by the same name.
The
Nirvana unplugged version [1993] came with good timing for the singer songwriter’s total recall after his previous decade’s “Phil Collins years”.
He would later recount a snapshot after a live show, with fans praising him for including a Kurt Cobain song on the show…
We hear the
electronic, middle ’90s version and then the 1970 original.

We passed upon the stair
We spoke of was and when
Although I wasn’t there
He said I was his friend
Which came as a surprise
I spoke into his eyes
I thought you died alone
A long long time ago
Oh no, not me
We never lost control
You’re face to face
With the man who sold the world
I laughed and shook hand
And made my way back home
I searched for form and land
For years and years I roamed
I gazed a gazeless stare
We walked a million hills
I must have died alone
A long, long time ago
Who knows?
Not me
I never lost control
You’re face to face
With the man who sold the world
Who knows?
Not me
We never lost control
You’re face to face
With the man who sold the world

I think the ’90s version is much, much better than the original.

More refined and well-executed maybe, but not better. I go with the public on this : the original is an insuperable all-time classic.

Terrific! I might like the 70’s version better. Thank you for the contrasts!
